Local Undergraduate

Kappa Chapter @ Johnson C. Smith University

Kappa Chapter was founded on November 26, 1946 on the campus of Johnson C. Smith University by five distinguished ladies: Marguerite Robinson, Sadie Crawford, Melvine James, Helen Kibbler and Sara Schofield.  Kappa Chapter is the only sorority on the JCSU campus that has a single Greek Letter.

In 1947, Kappa Chapter was awarded a plaque for having members with the highest scholastic average above all other Greek organizations on the campus of Johnson C. Smith University.  To this day, they continue to achieve the Sorority's State & Regional Highest GPA awards either by the chapter as a whole or by one shining member.  In fact, Soror Patricia Gillespie received one of the highest honors at Johnson C. Smith Univesity when she was declared co-valedictorian for the graduating class of 2004.

Kappa Chapter programs during the academic school year include:
  • Love Shouldn't Hurt (Self-Esteem Workshop)
  • Finer Womanhood Week Programs
  • Clothing drives
  • Breast Cancer Awareness Workshop
  • HIV Workshop
  • Book Club
This chapter is accompanied by the elite men of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. (Alpha Epsilon Chapter). Together they work to uplift the unity of brother and sisterhood within the Greek community and promote the principles for which our organizations were founded upon.

Upsilon Xi Chapter @ UNC Charlotte

Upsilon Xi Chapter was founded on September 20, 1991 by five distinguished and courageous women: Crystal Sterling, Daphne Satterwhite, Ktura Rendleman, Donyale Henderson and Chanda Wright.

It is because of these young women and the lovely ladies that followed them that the Upsilon Xi Chapter remains as strong as it is today.  They are an award winning chapter of strong, determined women who MAKE THINGS HAPPEN! The University and the Sorority continues to recognize and reward them for creative programming and outstanding community service.

About Delta Zeta

Delta Zeta was organized and chartered in December of 1934 by Ethel Butler, Thelma Harris Hunt, Lucille Robinson, Laura Davidson Rollings, and Sarah Scott Schofield with the understanding that service to our community would be our greatest legacy.

Delta Zeta has consistently awarded annual scholarships to area students. The Sarah Scott Schofieild scholarship was established to recognize the achievements and potential of young women and to assist them financially with their pursuit of higher education. The scholarship has been named to commemorate Sarah Scott Schofield, a charter member of the Delta Zeta Chapter and active member for over 60 years.

In the 1980's as part of our national initiative, the chapter began and continued to operate a successful Stork's Nest program. The Stork's Nest Program is designed to promote prenatal care participation and healthy behaviors during the pregnancy through two components - incentives and education. Stork's Nest participants "earn" points toward incentives, such as maternity or baby care items, through a variety of positive, health-promoting activities such as attending prenatal care appointments, participating in prenatal education classes, keeping appointments for well-baby visits.

In 1992, Delta Zeta hosted the International Grand Boule' under the leadership of r Eunice Thomas, Past International Grand Basileus with Madie Simpson serving as Grand Marshall.

In 1998, Delta Zeta hosted the 53rd Eastern Regional Conference, led by Teloria Stafford, Basileus at the time.   Dorothy Allison and Barbara Hendricks served as associate conference marshals.

In April 2001, the chapter completed all of the necessary requirements and rigorous process for establishing the Zetas of Charlotte Benevolent Foundation.  The Zetas of Charlotte Benevolent Foundation is a 501c(3) organization established to foster the ideals of service, scholarship and unity among mankind.  In 2004, the Capital Campaign was initiated as a means of generating contributions for the purchase of a Zeta house.  During this year, the Zeta house and the adjacent two vacant lots were purchased.

Today Delta Zeta continues to serve the community with various programs under the auspices of our Community Outreach committee.  The Z-HOPE (Zetas Helping Other People Excel) program was launched in 2003 by Barbara C. Moore, Past International Grand Basileus.  Z-HOPE is an outreach service initiative designed to enhance, cultivate and empower the African-American community and persons of color to develop health promoting lifestyle choices across the lifespan.  Z-HOPE focuses its efforts within five major populations: women, youth, seniors, men and international women and is designed to address the whole person via a holistic framework that focuses on the three key elements of life, mind, body and spirit.

Other events and programs aimed at serving the Charlotte-Mecklenburg community include our Financial Seminar partnered with Wachovia/Wells Fargo, The United States Census Bureau 2010, March of Dimes Walk for Babies and Rites of Passage.

Delta Zeta's auxiliaries include Amicae, Archonettes, Amicettes and Pearlettes.  The chapter also sponsors two undergraduate chapters: Kappa at Johnson C. Smith University and Upsilon Xi at UNC Charlotte.
