Delta Zeta  was organized and chartered in December of 1934 by Ethel Butler, Thelma Harris Hunt, Lucille Robinson, Laura Davidson Rollins, and Sarah Scott Schofield with the undersdaing that service to our community would be our greatest legacy.

Delta Zeta has consistently awarded annual scholarships to area students. The Sarah Scott Schofield scholarship was established to recognize the achievements and potential of young women and to assist them financially with their pursuit of higher education. The scholarship has been named to commemorate Sarah Scott Schofield, a founder of the Delta Zeta Chapter and active member for over 60 years.

In the 1980's, as part of our national initiatve,  the chapter began and continued to operate a successful Stork's Nest program.  The Stork's Nest Program is designed to promote prenatal care participation and healthy behaviors during the pregnancy through two components - incentives and education. Stork's Nest clients "earn" points toward incentives, such as maternity or baby care items, through a variety of positive, health-promoting activities such as attending prenatal care appointments, participating in prenatal education classes, keeping appointments for well-baby visits.

In 1992, Delta Zeta hosted the International Grand Boule' under the leadership of Soror Eleanor Golden, Past International Grand Basileus with Soror Madie Simpson serving as Grand Marshall.

In 1998, Delta Zeta hosted the 53rd Eastern Regional Conference, led by Soror Teloria Stafford, Basileus at the time.  Sorors Dorothy Allison and Barbara Hendricks served as associate conference marshals.

In April, 2001, the chapter completed all of the necessary requirements and rigours process for establishing the Zetas of Charlotte Benevolent Foundation. The Zetas of Charlotte Benevolent Foundation is a 501c(3) organization established to foster the ideals of service, scholarship, and unity among mankind. In 2004, the Capital Campaign was initiated as a means of generating contributions for the purchase of a Zeta house During this year, the  Zeta house and the adjacent two vacant lots were purchased.

Today Delta Zeta continues to serve the community with various programs organized under the auspices of  our Community Outreach committee. The  Z-HOPE (Zetas Helping Other People Excel) program was launched in 2003 by our Barbara C. Moore, Past International Grand Basileus.  Z-HOPE is an outreach service initiative designed to enhance, cultivate and empower the African-American community and persons of color to develop health promoting lifestyle choices across the lifespan. Z-HOPE focuses its efforts within five major populations: women, youth, seniors, men and international women and is designed to address the whole person via a holistic framework that focuses on the three key elements of life: mind, body, and spirit.

Other events and  programs aimed at serving the Charlotte-Mecklenburg community include our Finanical Seminar, partnered with Wachovia/Wells Fargo, The United States Census Buerau 2010, March of Dimes-Walk for Babies, and Rites of Passage.

Delta Zeta's auxiliaries include Amicae, Archonettes, and Amicettes.  The chapter also sponsors two undergraduate chapters: Kappa at Johnson C. Smith University and Upsilon Xi at UNC – Charlotte.
